    Tin Tiled Ceiling

Neat Ceiling Tile Shelf by 'Playingwithbrushes'Tin TilesPeople often ignore their ceilings as a decorating option.  It was common in ancient times that ceiling were painted a color.  It was only until recent that white was the most common pick.  Ceiling tile is an attractive way to conceal pipes and wires as well as sloppy ceilings.  Ceiling tiles come in n various styles and textures including antique tile and tiles that are made to look vintage. Faux tin ceiling tile comes in a large variety of colors and patterns and can simulate antique tin. Antique Tin can be expensive, as well as you may not be able to get the quantity you are needing.  The Faux Tin tile is lightweight and often is quite easy to install as it often has a tongue and groove design for easy placement.

Styrofoam Ceiling Tile is another consideration as the cost is quite affordable.  It also serves as a good source for insulation. Styrofoam tile is also lightweight and easy to work with.

If you plan on purchasing the antique tin tile, be sure to measure out your ceiling before you purchase so you don’t run out of material half way through the job.

    Double-glazed windows

bay-windowmain1If you’re being shown round a Victorian house by an enterprising estate agent, they will often reel off a list of period features that they think will help you to fall in love and them to get their commission.

You’ll hear “fireplace, cornicing, ceiling rose, bannisters, panelled doors”, each enunciated with vocal tones usually associated with chocolate adverts. But the agent’s piece de resistance is often “original sash windows”, delivered with a verbal flourish.

    Sash window in derelict house

Sash windows can be expensive to repair and very expensive to replace

But there has been a 20-30 year assault on this period feature, according to Chris Wood, head of building conservation and research at English Heritage.

“There has been a big marketing push by those selling double glazing to point out the benefits. Many people take the straightforward option of replacing them.”  Read the rest of the story here

    Roman Ancient

Casamidy in Paris Remodelista StonePhotocredit Diana museWe can gather knowledge of roman design from the stone and metal artifacts from Pompeii and Herculaneum and other references in literature and art. One thing is for sure, there was no microwaves, OR in-door plumbing, tvs, and clocks in Roman days. (duh) Sundials were used, and metal boxes were filled with hot coal which kept your house warm though the night. Yet, many people, (like myself) find such beauty in the old roman architecture that is often not seen today.

In todays society, quantity, rather than quality matter. Today corporations would rather pump out a massive product that is cheaply made than put time and effort into making something that is hand crafted with quality materials. It is interesting to note that in roman design, there was often very little furniture. Although, let it be known that what they did have was usually rare and expensive, and made with high quality material and fine workmanship. One could reason that their interior walls were so elaborately decorated because it was one form of decor that was in reach and didn’t cost any money. In today’s society, we see homes filled to the brim with knick knacks, yet, the faux work on the walls have virtually disappeared, because we have replaced it with purchases of “things”, instead of using what we had. Roman ceilings were vaulted and painted in brilliant colors, or they were divided into panels by beams. Doors were richly paneled and carved, or plated with bronze, or made of solid bronze. Doorposts were sheathed with beautifully carved marble.

Common roman furniture were mirrors on walls, desks/writing tables, chests of drawers, and display cabinets with glass doors. Couches were extremely popular in Roman Culture. They were often extremely ornamental. A lectus couch could act as a sofa and also a bed. Early mattresses were stuffed with straw; later they were made of wool and even feathers.

The famous curule chair that we see in almost every magazine spread is now gaining popularity again. Chairs were not upholstered, but cushions were used.

Chests were found in every house. They were usually made of wood and often bound with iron. Small chests were made of silver or gold. Cabinets were often beautifully decorated. Needless to say, The Roman period of design is still looked at as an inspiration to designers around the world.

I cut this out of a magazine because I thought the wood styled walls were fabulous. It creates an old world castle-ispired look that you see in Europe. Dark walls work really well if you have quite a bit of light coming into the room. If your home doesn’t have as much natural light exposure, and you are really drawn to dark walls, - be sure to put a lot of energy into creating light for your room. Dark colors eat up all the light, so wire your home to turn on the lamps in a r0om at your light switch.

This is not really (roman), but it fits in with a theme styled design. The old style wood beams are regal, while the curved church doors really make the room!

Drexel Heritage- Stunning photo….  Also a bit unrealistic with such stunning armchairs outside.  Drexel has the nicest furniture, if you didn’t know.  (Who would put 1K armchairs outside?  LOL!  It sure makes a stunning picture though!   You can have a spectacular farmhouse table outside that is fully protected from the rain and the sun.  You can have the wood finish that is in your dreams and not have it be destroyed by rain.  the secret is - You will want to polyurethane your wood well.  (One trick I was taught is to use those cheap foam brushes when adding polyurethane rather than an actual paint brush)  You will sure thank me, when the finish turns out perfectly even.  I have done dozens of tables.

This look of having the veins grow up the side of your home is a really spectacular idea.  One word of caution that was given to me by a concrete termite inspector is that it actually damages the brick or stone of your home, as the plants eventually dig into the concrete damaging the structure.  Instead, consider a metal lattice that you weave your plants through.  As they grow, be sure to just add additional lattice.  It is a much better idea than suddenly finding out the stones are crumbling beneath.  Picture Credit- Cottage at Polesden Lacey on Flickr

Old Wrought Iron Fencing. Even this paint finish can be duplicated.  There are several ways of producing this look.  (Actually my specialty is in faux finishes)   First you can start off painting your gate in a (Rockwood Terra Cotta Color from Duron Paint.   Next, (after it drys) Use a white oil paint, and paint a (small) section and wipe it off with a rag, or paper towel.  (ALways wear gloves with oil paint)  Photo Credit Michael Cemetry on Flickr

Are you after more of a shabby chic look for your patio area?  These iron painted chairs have shown their age beautifully!  You too can have this aged look simply by painting your chairs white, and then distressing them in the right areas, where obvious wear and tear occurs.  The trick to this faux look is the distressing, as well as the brown glaze that you paint over the white.  Ralph Lauren has a line of paint that you can tint any color.  We suggest a brown glaze which when used over white creates a beautiful antique look.  Simply take a dry cloth and gently wipe off the glaze in areas revealing a antique white.  Photo Credit House Of Bliss

This picture was a cut out of the Country Home Magazine.  I really love their idea with the concrete square slabs, creating an architectural look with grass.  You can transform your back yard simply by adding geometrical patterns with these concrete slabs.  For an even more interesting look, turn the squares off to form a diamond pattern than the typical square pattern.  It may require some cutting, but the extra effort will pay off.  It is another great idea for a simple patio area that doesn’t require building skills.  (I actually cut out this picture  for the unique door color….  Isn’t it stunning?

This wood outdoor trellis is the perfect idea for an outdoor sitting area.  -Home and Garden by Washington Home & Garden

Another cut out from my Country Home Magazine.  I thought they did a spectacular job of setting up a comfortable dining area outside.  The metal folding chairs work well, as they don’t wrought in the rain, and will hold up through the seasons.  The outdoor fireplace is another spectacular idea of creating a “inside space” and bringing it to the outdoors.  Don’t you just love their Architectural design with the cobblestone borders on the ground?

Another cut out of my favorite projects (that I would love to get to) –”someday”  Isn’t this an interesting idea?  It looks like tall metal poles that support a circular form built with wire netting.  I know you can buy small sheets of this at Home Depot, but if any of you readers have any other ideas of how to build this, please feel free to leave your comments at the end of the post.  It sure is a spectacular idea.  You could in fact built it with small windows around the cylinder - creating a feel similar to the Roman Coliseum.  It would take some time to build, but a relatively accomplishable  structure that anyone could build without fancy building skills.

Another cut out of my favorite magazines that features some spectacular outdoor decor ideas.  The hedge is shaped to complement the architectural columns.  It is a really great look~

      Pierre Deux- Fruit Tree

Pierre Deux- Notice the overhead branches formed to create an over head trellis.   All you need is to build a support and gently wind in your branches and plants over time to create this look.  I might add, I would built it a bit higher.  No need to invite the spiders to your family gathering.

Another cut out- Another perfect example of this.  You don’t have to spend a lot of money on this idea.  The fullness happens over time, as you gently guide the branches over head as they grow.  The iron table is a perfect practical

Outdoor Green House?  I love the Black paint.  Most people would pick white, but I think the black does a spectacular job!

    Exterior Doors

Paris doorwayGrand French DoorConsider a new fresh facelift for your front door will be the talk of your neighbourhood! Consider painting your front door in Black, Red, Olive, or even Beige which can give your home a whole new look. In our local area, there is a home with a lavender door paint color, and I am sure it catches the attention of every driver down that particular street. What kind of a person  picks Lavender, one thinks? A person who is bold, that is who!  It looks outstanding, as they picked the perfect shade! If you want a little more than a makeover, (perhaps a transformation to your whole home , consider a period style door that can add character, and get a look that no one has!

I was surprised to see that there are a number of sellers on ebay selling NICER urns (such as the one here) for much much much less! Painted Moulding & Millwork

rococo-4scan0167Wall mouldings can add interest and detail to a room. Crown and base mouldings can enlarge a room, giving it a stately feel, but wall mouldings bring it up a knotch. They add the dramatic detail of the old world charm often found in classic architecture fround in the palaces of France. Chair-rail mouldings, -similar to wainscoting which divide your wall, giving the illusion of taller walls. Wood mouldings can be the most expensive, but if you are after the natural wood look, it is worth the investment. Polyurethane mouldings and Foam Mouldings are an alternative choice for painted walls. If you are hoping for wood panels, (but without the cost), consider a faux paint artist who is talented in creating wood looks from paint. Often times, the painted wood looks better than what is often available at your local hardware store. Also, you are not limited to pine, but can have the more exotic looks such as burl, olive wood, bocote,Snake wood, or thuya. Consider looking for antique mouldings for half the cost or foam mouldings and consider painted detail. Check out some of the pictures below for paint and moulding ideas

    Interior French Doors

French Doors 3Country LivingFrench doors are often referred to as a French window because the majority of the door is made up of panels of glass. A French door is typically used as a style element, often a way to bring more natural light into a home. A french door does a spectacular job of dividing rooms in two, while connecting the 2 rooms. Take a bathroom, and a bedroom, a office and a sitting room. or kitchen onto the patio area. While a French door can be functional, it is typically used more for aesthetic purposes, to create a dramatic effect. Because a French door is so versatile, it may be a repeating theme in a home. Another option with French doors is the idea of using them as a wall. Simply by locking the door in a stationary position with a bolt or post. Creating a open effect with pairs of french doors is a way of opening up your home keeping the natural light and appeal of a bigger space.
