It can be hard for consumers to judge the hype over organic foods. Are these more expensive products really better for your health, or is this another marketing campaign to make us spend more money? There are certainly people on both sides of the issue and depending on who you ask, you’re likely to get a different response. There are health nuts who swear by it and others who simply dismiss it as nothing more than a ploy. While the debate over organic versus conventional foods rages on and on, there is some concrete evidence, as well as a bit of common sense, that organic foods do offer many health benefits. Wherever you stand on the health debate, don’t forget the advantage to our environment that is offered by organic alternatives. Farmers that grow organic produce and raise organic livestock must use sustainable practices, which are always better for the environment then the conventional methods. Even organic enthusiasts cannot deny that the actual shelf price of organic foods is almost always higher than the shelf price of conventional foods. However, what is the real cost? Organic foods have a much lower cost to the environment, and for many people who stick with the organic diet, these foods lead to much lower health care costs as well. While many pesticides have been banned by the FDA for use in the production of produce, many known carcinogens are still used today. Additionally, some would argue that we may not yet know how genetically engineered crops impact the body. Currently there are over 40 types of genetically engineered crops approved by the FDA. This all leads to a high level of contaminants consumed by people who eat a lot of conventional produce. While fruits and vegetables are a necessary part of a healthy diet, all those contaminants are not. If you can’t afford to buy only organic, try selecting organic for those foods that you eat a lot of, or the foods that are known to involve high amounts of pesticides. Strawberries, for example, are known to be sprayed with many pesticides. While the debate over the cost of organic foods is likely to continue, it is hard to argue against the evidence of their health benefits.
