The New Internet Marketing Trend – Streaming Web Audio

Putting MP3 audio files on the Internet isn’t something new or recently invented, technology, it has been making noise online for quite a number of years, but has never had been quite so popular and talked about as it is in today’s internet market. There is definitely a buzz around it today.

When I first started multimedia design seven years ago, MP3 audio files were already spread around the Internet. MP3′s popularity rose rapidly after Napster released their P2P file sharing network program in 1999.

Because the MP3 file size is much smaller then “MOV”, “WAV” audio format, and has better sound quality, it didn’t take too long for MP3 to become a major digital audio format of Internet.

Today, it continues to dominate the Internet’s audio market, and has remained unchanged as the best choice among digital audio music formats.

Historically, there was a lack of Internet speed and the size of computer hard disks and ROM’s were relatively small and expensive. Especially MP3 files had to be converted from “MOV” or “WAV” file formats and the audio recording, editing hardware and software was very complicated to use, as well as very expensive and only professional studios had deep enough pockets to purchase.

Therefore, it had never been an easy tool for Internet marketers and web developers to use to their advantage. I can still remember the struggles to compress the audio files, and balancing the quality of the sound, to make it 28.8kbps modem compatible.

Very few business websites had web audio in their website, and the ones who did were only there as background music. There wasn’t any marketing purpose or strategy behind it. It was largely designers showing off their “advanced tricks”, trying to impress their employers, essentially an “e-toy” for website designers.

Today, the Internet bandwidth is no longer a major impediment to Internet multimedia data transferring. Technology continues to evolve at lightning speed, computers now have massive capacities and the price of hardware has dramatically dropped, making it possible for web hosting company to provide a large amount of server space for website owners to store and transfer audio and video content, at an enormously low cost.

But the price of audio editing software remained relatively high, with more advanced features, but still posed a barrier to Internet marketers who intended to make audio a part of their Internet marketing.

This presented an opportunity for Internet Marketers and software developers. Together, they have worked out these issues, limiting seldom used advanced features, keeping only the most utilized, and developed a much more simple software for web audio recording.

This new web audio software and related services has been sold and used by Internet marketers and online business owners throughout the past few years and the results are quite convincing.

Some have claimed their sales conversion rate to have increased by 40% (even 400%) just by adding the audio sales litter on their web page. Can this be true? I will discuss this in more depth in another issue, but absolutely, web audio and video added a new “depth”, a new dimension to Internet marketing. It is mainly used for audio newsletters, web audio sales letters, audio testimonials, recorded tele-seminars, raining materials and more.

It is a very simple piece of software. If you know how to talk, and how to click, you can record your message and put it online. No experiences or technical know-how necessary, no special equipment needed, except a microphone connected to your computer.

I still use the advanced Pro version audio/video production software for my complicated projects, but I like to use this small, and feature-focused software for the smaller single task projects, because of the simplicity and the time saving. And the price of the software is so cheep!

For those who don’t have a computer, can’t figure out how to plug in the microphone into their computer, or are too lazy to do so, some marketers have even designed a telephone system for recording audio files for them.
You simply pick up phone, dial their number, record your message on their system, and they will deliver your audio file to your website. But you have to pay a monthly fee for your laziness, and you still have to pick up your phone and dial the number.

Some dedicated web hosting companies, such as the one I use, ThirdSphere, also jumped onto this new trend, including related features in their service package to gain sales. It provides Flash Audio Generator, Flash Video Generator software, and helps web designers to convert their pre-recorded audio and video file to a lightweight FLV file to be put online.

As a new highly effective Internet marketing method, streaming web audio and video will continue to grow in the Internet marketing realm and continue to grasp at Internet marketers and visitors’ attention for a number of yeas, until the day when all sites on Internet have a voice and talk to us.

    The Benefits of Audio Podcasts

Podcasting is like radio broadcasting, but with added benefits. Where ever you are, you can listen to a podcast of your choice, without depending on a time schedule like in radio broadcasting. Many other advantages over more conventional broadcasting methods have increased the popularity of audio podcasting in today’s society. Some of these benefits and advantages are described below.

    Easy to Record
All it takes is to document your dictation via a microphone to a computer, to record an audio podcast. The process is so simple that just about anybody can record an audio podcast. A number of free recording software are available for this purpose, making the task so much more easier and simpler.

    Easy to Transmit
Uploading an audio podcast is just as easy as recording one. Once the recording is complete, all you have to do is save it in MP3 format, upload it to your server and generate an RSS feed for the podcast you created. There are many automated tools available for this purpose and no additional skills are necessary for any of these steps.

    Sophisticated Equipment not Required
If you have a computer, a microphone and an internet connection, you can start creating your own podcasts with no restrictions. Investments on sophisticated equipment is not at all necessary, although a good microphone with better sound capturing capabilities will ensure the quality of your audio podcasts are in top form.

    Inexpensive
As the process doesn’t require any added equipment and there is no necessity to invest on sophisticated software, the cost is very minimal. Publishing an audio podcast can be done free of charge too, as many websites offer free hosting facilities on the net.

    Diverse Listening Sources
Listeners can access audio podcasts through various transmitting devices, from a computer to a mobile phone, an MP3 player, iPod or any device with audio capabilities. Therefore audio podcasts can reach a more diverse audience in different consumer levels and social standards.

    Selective Listening Ability
A key advantage of audio podcast broadcasting is the ability to reach a selective target group, making it a good marketing tool. On the other hand, listeners can chose the programmes / broadcasts they are most interested in and listen only to these chosen broadcasts, rather than wait impatiently for their favorite programme in the case of a radio broadcast.

    No Time and Location Constrains
Listeners can download an audio podcast of their choice and listen to it at their leisure, at any time of the day, from any location. You don’t have to depend on a time schedule to listen to your favorite audio podcasts; in contrary, listening time can be fitted into your personal schedule at your convenience. If you have access to an internet connection, you can download audio podcasts of your choice from any part of the world.

    Archives Available
Access to archives of favorite audio programs is another benefit of choosing audio podcasts over more conventional methods. Many of these archives are available free of charge, via a variety of websites, covering a broad interest range.

Rhapsody music download service is our current top pick. Perhaps one of the best reasons to give Rhapsody a shot is the 14-day free trial. We love that a lot.

Rhapsody used to be $15 a month, but they’ve changed. After adding more MP3s, they lowered the price to $12.99 monthly.

Rhapsody now works with any music device including iPod—this is a must for us.

We also love how lyrics are included too.

Bottom line, all the updates done to Rhapsody have made this an excellent service.

    Rhapsody Review Key Points:

    1. Millions of songs to listen to (big plus here).
    2. Ad-Free digital radio (thank you!)
    3. Playlist sharing (even if your friends aren’t Rhapsody members, you can share playlists).
    4. Windows & Mac compatible (huge benefit).
    5. Works with music devices like iPod (fill em up!)

    Rhapsody User Feedback:

What follows are some random comments from Rhapsody users.

Anon Rhapsody User: 10/10  I have had 0 (thats a “zero”) issues with Rhapsody. The streaming is lightning fast, songs that are queued in the playlist will be cached by the time the current song ends, initial download speeds are OUTRAGEOUS.. the list goes on.

Anon Rhapsody User: 9/10 Virtually complete catalog of my favorite artists. Could listen all day long!

Anon Rhapsody User: 9/10 Large library, better audio quality than Napster, plays well with other programs and reasonable monthly fee.

Anon Rhapsody User: 9/10 Lots of great Music, Songs I’ve never even heard before are now my favorite tunes. Very good categorization of Music genres.

Anon Rhapsody User: 8/10 New features, updated UI, support for devices.

    Amazon MP3 Download Service Review

Amazon’s MP3 Download Service is a great music service. Currently, it’s our 2nd best pick. If you want to know what MP3 music service we like best, click here.

    3. The quality is outstanding.

[ you can get MP3 music from Amazon + see top-selling music here ]

Overall, Amazon is a solid MP3 music service. Their downloader app works with Mac and Windows. It’s great, because it will download your purchases and add them to your iTunes playlists if you use iTunes for your music collection.

Costs: I’ve bought all sorts of music from Amazon and have never once paid what I consider a high cost. In fact, I’ve found huge discounts on some titles by simply browsing around. While I like the iTunes music service, I always buy at Amazon first.

Amazon MP3 Download Service Review Key Points:

    1. Very nice quality (better than iTunes).
    2. Actual MP3 files, so they play on anything.
    3. No DRM! Do what you want with YOUR music.
    4. Great selection. It’s growing all the time.
    5. Easy as pie download method + automatic addition to iTunes sotware.
    6. Works with Mac and Windows.

Amazon MP3 Download Service User Feedback:

    (MP3ServiceReviews.com owner)

    I’d give Amazon’s MP3 service a solid 9 / 10.

The only reason it’s not a perfect 10 is because the selection needs to grow some. I’ve been pleased with the growth though. Too bad they don’t offer a Rhapsody-type service.

Check out that link we gave you. Amazon is always offering special deals. No one should be paying full price for their music.

I love the no DRM music and actual MP3 files. It makes using MY music how I want so much easier. Also you should note that the quality of the music files is actually higher than you’d buy on iTunes.

eMusic - MP3 Music Download Service

[ you can get the eMusic free trial + 50 free downloads here ]

And nope, there’s no catch. You can signup for the free trial, download 50 free MP3s, cancel the trial and keep em! It even says so right on their Web site.

eMusic’s MP3 download service works with iPod, Zune and any other MP3 player we’ve seen.

Song List: Currently, eMusic has a nice collection of 3.5 million songs.

    While eMusic isn’t a 5-star product, it’s pretty decent.

    eMusic Review Key Points:

    1. Free trial, so you can see what it’s like first.
    2. 50 free music downloads (cancel and keep, a plus).
    3. 3.5 million songs.
    4. True MP3 files, so they’ll play on anything out there.
    5. Pricing at about 25 cents per song, which is way cheaper than iTunes.
    6. Good for Windows and Mac users.

    eMusic User Feedback:

Even though we’ve given eMusic a 3 of 5 rating (meaning it’s a decent MP3 service), we’ve heard from many users who love it.

Anon eMusic User: 9 / 10 Unmatched indie selection, great writing, higest-quality encoding, referral bonuses, low cost per track, NO DRM!!!

Anon eMusic User: 9/10 One-fourth the price of iTunes, non-leash subscription.

Anon eMusic User: 8 / 10 Overall eMusic is a great music download service. And it will be the best for people who love independent music(like me). I found this site is my best source for download some downtempo, nu-jazz for tuning.

Featured eMusic User Review: 9 / 10 All these people who say emusic has poor selection, IMO, are not the type of consumers who would like this service. Also, there was one review where someone said “it is okay if you like strange music.” Well, if great jazz, blues, folk, classical, alt-country, oldies, and a variety from other independent labels count as strange, count me in!

You can sample music before you download it too, since they do have some covers of major label artists on it. It’s called PREVIEW people! I’ve never downloaded one of these and I’ve never downloaded anything I didn’t like.

Bottom line, if want good music at a fair price, that supports up and coming music, like to explore new types of music (expand beyond the barren top 40 land), and not be locked in indefinitely to i-(insert piece of hardware name here), than this site is for you. If you want top 40 stuff, do yourself a favor and buy the CD and rip it. It is worth the extra couple bucks to not be forever locked into an ipod.

    iTunes Review

iTunes - MP3 Music Download Service

iTunes music download service is a runner up. If you want to know what MP3 music service we like best, click here.

iTunes is more than just music downloads. You can get music videos, podcasts (free), TV shows, full-length movies and more.

[ you can get iTunes right here ]

The quality is very good and now there’s add-ons, like Apple TV for streaming content to your TV. If you have a PS3 or Xbox 360, you can also stream the content from your PC or Mac to your TV. I do this all day long.

While not a “pay one fee and get it all” service, iTunes definately has its place. It offers some things not sold elsewhere.

    iTunes Review Key Points:

    1. Loads of songs, movies, podcasts and more to download.
    2. Works with Windows and Macs.
    3. The quality is great.
    4. Constantly new content being added.

    iTunes User Feedback:

(MP3 Service Reviews owner) If there’s one con, IMHO, it would be that you can’t just take iTunes music downloads and transfer them anywhere as they are in a different format. However, I solved this by using a simple program, which easily put all my iTunes music into MP3 format.

I really didn’t need to do this, but I was bored. My iTunes stuff streams beautifuly, plays on my iPods and sounds great while I’m at the computer.

Having personally purchased probably a thousand songs or so (and other stuff), I can tell you that I’m happy with iTunes.
