    Everyone knows that the body needs high quality sources of nutrition especially when working out for an upcoming mud run. Training regimen aside you need the proper combination of carbohydrate sources and lean protein to fuel muscles and prevent muscle breakdown. When training for a mud run you are going to be focusing on functional strength and endurance. You will need to pull yourself over obstacles and trudge through miles of mud. Extended workout tend to lead to greater muscle breakdown and potential for injury. 30-60 minutes prior to working out it is essential to get in at least 300 calories combined carbohydrate and protein. If you plan on working out for more than 45 minutes it might be a good idea to sip on BCAA’s throughout the workout. BCAAs supply the muscles with proteins that are essential for energy production this leads to less protein being extracted by cannibalizing muscle fiber. This leads to better workouts and a faster recovery. At the end of your workout make sure you take in at least 30grams of quick digesting protein such as whey or soy isolate. I tend to prefer whey as there is evidence it is more male friendly. Whatever you do do not skimp on post workout nutrition. If you pass up on the shake make sure you get an extra helping with the balanced meal that should be consumed within 1-2 hours after a high intensity training, If you follow these basic guidelines you should be setting yourself up for a great MUD RUN.
