Apparently sewing thimbles are all the rage for video game characters missing tips of their pinkies. I spied with my little eye a particularly pale pagan priest sporting this in the newly released Diablo IV trailer:

So did Elizabeth from BioShock Infinite turn into a bad guy in the Diablo Universe? Was this a Blizzard homage to the BioShock universe?

Can we take bets on the next pinkieless character? Samus?

Our blogger and streaming extraordinaire Nick recently posted his review of the PC horror/survival game Overland. Overland landed a respectable 7.5/10 and seems to be a solid, albeit uneven, game. Might be worth a look if turn based horror is your thing: 

Overland can be enjoyed on its surface merits. It is a stylish, humane and sober turn-based survival game. It is a story generator that forces tough, desperate decisions. It has infinite replayability and is catnip for achievement hunters. But I see a game that can do more, even within its confined spaces and limited narrative.

We recently started toying with the idea of collecting screenshots of games we have been playing and creating galleries . With the ease of simply pressing a button on the Switch controller or hitting F12 in Steam, we’ve begun to amass a collection of screenshots we find particularly charming, poignant or funny. Some of the screenshots come with a story and others are just moments in a game we want to share.

The gallery is small at the moment, as I work through my Steam screenshot library, but we have big plans to expand the library to include a wide range of games and images.

We don’t use any special tools others use to turn screenshots into works of art but the simple, home-grown approach works for what we’re trying to convey — captured moments in time that caught our attention or took our breath away. We hope you like them, too.

The kids are back in school, it’s an off Friday for the Buttonmasher and the weekend is laid out in front of us, full of opportunities to get some gaming in and watch some pro Dota (The International 9!).

Right now, there isn’t a particular game that has my full attention. For a while I was playing the charming (and maddeningly frustrating) Rogue-like Below but I have cooled a little on that (you can only do so many corpse runs before you want to give up). So what to play this weekend is wide open.

The year of completing games is still in full effect. With Destiny 2, Resident Evil 2, and The Division 2 already finished, there are a variety of games in varying states of completeness I could return to. The Division 2 has new DLC. My six-years-too-late run through Bioshock Infinite is nearing a close. I’m near the end of another run through Dead Rising (the OG), I started poking around in NieR:Automata again (and remembering how good that game is) and for completeness sake, I should pop back into Thimbleweed Park and put a fork in that one. Oh, and for good measure, my fellow buttonmasher Nick has got me thinking about Pillars of Eternity, too.

Now that I look at that list, I am suddenly overwhelmed, which normally means I won’t play any of them and end up wasting time playing Dota 2. But not this time! Something, somehow, will get completed this weekend.

It’s been quite around these parts for the past couple months, but gaming has still been going strong but the age old question exists — if I gamed but didn’t blog about it, did it really happen?

With 2019 being the Year of Finishing games, things were going strong earlier in the year — Resident Evil 2 REmake was finished (twice!), Destiny 2 was “finished” (I didn’t really have a clue what was happening with the story, but I definitely finished off a boss at the end, so I think I finished it?), and The Division 2 was completed.

Now, with the Summer in full swing, gaming has slowed a bit. We still partake, but recently they have been small servings of old, reliable comfort food — Dota 2, mostly. But it’s time to shake things up. Today is one of our “free Fridays” meaning more freetime for me. I have a lot on my plate — I recently got back into the Sports game with a cheap pick-up of NBA 2k19 for the Switch (for 3!! bucks) and The Golf Club 2019 featuring PGA Tour (thanks, Games with Gold!) and the backlog on Steam is ever present in the back of my mind. I have some DLC I could partake in with The Division 2 but this weekend I may give something in my Steam Library a try. Maybe finish Dead Rising, maybe go back to Kenshi or maybe even try something new, like Tokyo 42.

And then, of course, is the Summer Steam Sale. We could get something new (like, say They are Billions or Below) and start the vicious cycle over again. I may need professional help.

Normally I’d complain that February releases have nothing to get excited about, but man, this February is loaded! While I’m still on an RE2 kick, there is more than one option this month that I’ve got on a wishlist somewhere. At the very top of that wishlist is that Crackdown 3 is good, because I am going to give that a long look, possibly ending with me picking it up. Fingers crossed! On to this month’s releases:

We recently went to an alternate work schedule at my place of employment where we now get every-other Friday off. This means 26(!) three-day weekends a year are in my future. I was hesitant at first, given that we would be working extra the other 9 days of the two-week work period, but I am already hooked. I know I can’t spend every free Friday playing video games, but for the first couple I think I’m justified. The weekend starts early for this guy.

Given that 2019 is going to be the Year of Finishing Games for me, I have a few games that I plan to wrap up before I dive into the first new release of 2019 I’ll be picking — Resident Evil 2 REmake. (It came bundled with my new Radeon video card (which I realize I never posted about, but yes I have a new PC to play on).

But before I get to that, I would like to wrap up a playthrough I started of Dead Rising and the campaign of Destiny 2. I am on the cusp of finishing both and should be able to accomplish that goal before I go headlong into the world of Resident Evil. There’s also the chance I give Dota Chess a try, too.
